How is it that war commanders half a world away, and centuries apart, would use the same strategies and tactics to find victory in war? Throughout the thousand-year record of the peoples of the Book of Mormon, war is mentioned in varying degrees of detail. War is also a thread running through the dynastic history of China. The two war commanders that are the focus in this work are Capt. Moroni, Chief Captain of the Nephite armies and Sun-Tzu, Chief Military Strategist for the state of Wu.
In this book I look at the similarities in their styles of command and there understanding and use of strategy to defend the freedom of their peoples. For centuries military commanders have studied Sun-Tzu’s teachings and when they follow them they were victorious. Although Moroni never knew of Sun-Tzu or his teachings his philosophies and strategies are very similar and he, too, was victorious (while the people were righteous). I hypothesize that both Sun Tzu and Capt. Moroni were inspired from on High. The book of Mormon states that Capt. Moroni received guidance and instruction from the prophet, Alma, and personal revelation directly from God because he was entitled to it as Chief Captain. We know less about the personal life of Sun-Tzu and who his mentors were. However, looking at the pattern set forth in the Nephite record I contend that Sun-Tzu also received personal revelation from God just as Moroni did. I believe this to be the case because I believe God wants his children to be free from bondage and that God inspires good men and women to do what is necessary to save souls and bring happiness to his children. I also touch on other military leaders in the book of Mormon who did or did not use the strategies and look at their outcomes.
Many women in the church wonder why there is so much emphasis placed on warfare in the scriptures. Warfare is often a topic focused on by men. We know that the scriptures are for all of God’s children so what is the message for his daughters? When we as women in the church take a different look at warfare in the scriptures, we will be able to better understand our role as mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters in this life. We fight every day to keep evil from our family members and to strengthen them for the time when they will strike out on their own. We can’t do this effectively if we don’t know the enemy and his tactics. The more we understand about our own strengths and talents as daughters of God the more we are able to use those strengths and talents as we face the tumultuous and uncertain world of the Last Days before the Second Coming of Christ.
We may not be physically ‘at the battles front’ (hymn 270, LDS Hymnbook) but we are involved in a spiritual war with Satan. God wants us, his people, to be free from spiritual bondage. I will also look at how strategies of Sun-Tzu and Capt. Moroni translate into spiritual warfare. I believe that these strategies will bring victory if we apply them on the spiritual battlefield. Why? Because they are divinely inspired… Because like Sun-Tzu and Capt. Moroni, we are fighting to be free and we are ‘Heaven’s Warriors’!
Stay tuned for inspiring stories of everyday heroism.
